As tonight turns into tomorrow, I'm forced to remember and continue retrieving from older memory what little I know of Emmett Till, the mutilated face that did much to affect change in the course of the civil rights movement in this supposed U.S. of A. 7:15, August 30th, 2005. Some friends and I went to filmforum to view a documentary called "The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till," written and directed by Keith Beauchamp. It was very well done and stands as a reminder of the continuing failure of the American (in) justice system. The trial for the prosecution of the people involved in the kidnapping and murder of Emmett Till has been reopened. Going to see this film (soon to become a national phenomenon) is one of many steps that we can all take to increase our awareness, sensitivity, and knowledge of the large social issues that are looming over us like a..a...
Okay I don't want to say dark cloud because it's way too cliche, but you know what I mean. This whole piece is a bit too deep for me, though I'm serious. The Emmett Till film was really well done and covered information we may have all heard before, but in a very comprehensive format. Lots of witnesses were interviewed who most of us have probably never heard of. If anyone who reads this (my first blog ever!) does reside in New York, I would highly recommend going to see it. The cost is only $10, or $11 if you purchase online at filmforum.com.
Anyway, I'm signing off for now, but you should all go to see the movie. And also stay abreast of the news on this topic. Several great articles have been written in the New York Times (even despite some of their more slanted stories and editorial pieces that have run recently) and other smaller publications. I asked the producer of the film when the film would be nationally released and I believe his answer was sometime in October. If you're interested, the website for the film is http://www.thinkfilmcompany.com/

Check it out and have a blessed one.
